Fogged Up Windows

What has two thumbs and went to the Drive In this weekend?
This Girl (yes, I just made THAT joke)
The Boyfriend had been planning the surprise date for a week, and wouldn’t tell me what we were doing except to dress comfortable and warm, and that we would be leaving Orange County. I actually like surprises, so I didn’t bombard him with questions and ask for hints. So when we drove up to the drive in, I can not tell you how excited I was. The last time I went to a drive in, they had these:

These are what you had to use backintheday to listen to the movie you were watching. Nowadays (I just aged myself) they just use a regular FM transmitter. Back then my parents used to load all the kids in the station wagon, wearing our footie pajamas, with blankets and pillows and off to the movies we would go. Before Saturday night, I honestly was convinced that all drive in theaters in Southern California were gone, tiny little ghost towns, that now serve as a weekend swapmeet. So you can only guess how excited I am that one exists about an hour outside of where I live. Im totally making this a monthly ritual. We saw 3 movies (well, 2 ½) all for the price of one feature at a regular theater. We belched like sailors (classy) while drinking beer in the car because WE COULD. We asked questions about the movie in a normal voice, because there was no one sitting around us. We brought our own food and snacks in, and didn’t have to spend $4 on a small popcorn. WE might have made out like teenagers just because that’s whats you are supposed to do – right?

Needless to say, it made my weekend. I love movies, I love going to the movies, and now Im going to love going to the drive in every month. Who wouldn’t?

  1. You know, I have never been to a drive-in. A drive THRU, yes. :) We didn't have the climate for such things growing up and there don't seem to be many left nowadays. Boo. The stuff I missed out on. You know what else we didn't have? Proms or graduation. So there.

  2. Dude...some of my earliest childhood memories are of being at the drive in. Sadly the drive in at our town closed way before I hit my teenage years, otherwise, I'd be able to relate to you and your making out like teenagers reference.

You've now set me on a mission to find a drive in near where I live.

  3. @Vegetable Assassin - What. No Proms? No graduations? No big deal. But no drive ins? Lame.

  4. How fabulous!! I've never been to a drive-in, but I think there is one about an hour from me that is open during certain seasons... this is something I MUST look into!

  5. I would have rolled around in the back seat, steamed up the windows, thrown my underwear out the window, and moan loudly...even if I was by myself!

  6. We have a drive in but its in the hood at a place called the Swap Shop. Im too scared to go for fear of geting robbed. I think you and I should move into Ree's cabin. You think she will adopt us?

  7. Unfortunately, the drive-in here closed before I was born. Just as entertaining though are the stories I heard about my Grandpa from when he went to the drive-in...apparently he was quite the womanizer!

  8. (still laughing at Organic Meatbag) Drive-ins rock--there's one here in the 'Burgh and everyone brings lawnchairs in the summer and coolers and we beer swap. lol Fire flies, tank tops...bare feet and beer. (only damn problem is the fleepin' COLD prevents the fun half the year!) Thats it. I'm moving.

  9. Never in my life have I visited a drive-in. My parents told me there used to be a bunch in the city but I don't know, they just don't have it anymore right now. Shucks. I wanna experience it! looks so much fun!

  10. I went the drive-in a few times as a kid as well, before they tore them down to build Walmarts and strip malls. Oh, the good old days!

  11. Hi Laurnie...

I absolutely love seeing movies, especialy all cuddled up against my boyfriend. Unfortunately we do not have drive in movies here in the Netherlands. Would be a bit risky, since the weather is too unpredictable. Such a nice surprise.

Thank you for visiting my blog!!

  12. Awesome. I love the drive in. I know of a few nearby, but haven't been to one in years! You've just inspired me to make trips out there once it's warmer.

  14. My sister makes THAT joke all the time. I've never heard anyone else do it. So instantly, I ♥ you.

We used to go to the drive-in all the time when I was little too. With the big speakers and the playground up by the screen. Awesome memories. There isn't one anywhere near me or I would go every chance I got.

    Thanks for following me!

  15. I haven't been to a drive-in for years! I think the last time I went they had dispensed with the speakers that hung on the car...but I can't be sure.

    Sounds like a great time!

  17. Oh the stories I could tell about going to the drive in. I could but I won't.
We used to go to all nighters. I think we have one old drive in left. The seats in our cars now would probably be more comfortable than a recliner at home. Maybe we should try it again.

  18. There is one in town and we never go as much as we should. But when it gets warmer, we will definitely go more.

  19. *sniffle* You're so lucky! I have always wanted to go to a drive-in. The only one I've ever seen had burned down some time before I had a chance to go to it.

I think this needs to go on my bucket list. :)
